New Destination - EP

No matter how many awards and distinctions she earns, Rachael Sage keeps moving forward. Her 2014 EP New Destination shows some of her strongest work to date. Mostly recorded in her home studio, the EP features emotional performances that bring out the best in these largely piano-based songs. Sage is in strong voice here, and the use of cello by Ward Williams, violin by Kelly Halloran, and theremin by international theremin master Armen Ra on the dramatic track “Wax” play to her newfound strengths. The title track was inspired by Sage’s viewing of the Carole King Broadway musical Beautiful; Sage left wishing to write an upbeat groove on her beloved piano. “Misery’s Grace” centers on strings and acoustic guitar for a tune that makes use of every octave her voice can handle. “Not Leaving You” concludes at the piano, again with a groove that counterbalances whatever sadness lurks in her soul. An EP’s brevity also ensures that no song is lost in the lineup.
